Israel confirms death of Hashem Safieddine, Nasrallah’s successor in Beirut airstrike
Hezbollah has confirmed that Hashem Safieddine, a key figure within the organization and a potential successor to Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike. The announcement came on Wednesday, following Israel's assertion that Safieddine was targeted, along with other senior Hezbollah leaders, in a strike in Beirut's southern suburbs approximately three weeks ago. In their statement, Hezbollah mourned Safieddine, describing him as “the head of the Executive Council of Hezbollah, his eminence the scholar Sayyed Hashem Safieddine,” and condemned the strike as a "criminal and aggressive Zionist raid."

"We mourn... the head of the Executive Council of Hezbollah, his eminence the scholar Sayyed Hashem Safieddine," the Iran-backed group said in a statement, adding he was killed by "a criminal and aggressive Zionist raid" alongside other Hezbollah fighters.

Who Was Hashem Safieddine?

Hashem Safieddine held significant leadership responsibilities within Hezbollah, acting as the chief of the Executive Council, akin to a prime minister. He managed various institutions, overseeing healthcare, education, and reconstruction projects, including rebuilding Beirut's southern suburbs following the 2006 war with Hezbollah. Safieddine was a member of Hezbollah's governing Shura Council and was recognized as a cleric with strong ties to Iran, having studied in the Islamic republic’s holy city of Qom. His familial connections to Iran deepened when his son married the daughter of General Qasem Soleimani, the late commander of Iran’s Quds Force.

Safieddine was regarded as a potential successor to Nasrallah after the latter’s reported assassination on September 27, which resulted from an Israeli airstrike. Since October 4, when Israeli forces targeted him, Safieddine had been unaccounted for, leading to speculation about his fate. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted at Safieddine's death during an October 8 speech, where he claimed that Israeli forces had eliminated “thousands of terrorists, including Nasrallah and his successors.”

The Israeli military confirmed that around three weeks ago, Safieddine and Ali Hussein Hazima, the head of Hezbollah's Intelligence Directorate, were killed along with other commanders in the strike targeting Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters in Dahiyeh, a southern Beirut suburb.

Safieddine was not only a prominent leader but also a public figure within Hezbollah. Unlike Nasrallah, who remained hidden for security reasons, Safieddine actively participated in political and religious events. He often delivered passionate speeches, especially during funerals of Hezbollah fighters. He became increasingly visible during the last year, addressing crowds even after Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which escalated the violence between Israel and Hezbollah. Following that attack, Safieddine declared at a rally in Beirut's southern suburbs, “Our guns and our rockets are with you. Everything we have is with you.”

Safieddine's death marks a significant blow to Hezbollah and raises questions about the organization's future leadership and strategy amid the ongoing conflict with Israel. Observers across the Middle East are closely monitoring Hezbollah's next moves in response to these developments.
