Suspected militants belonging to the Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) killed five persons and injured one in Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Friday.

A coal-laden truck was attacked by militants with sophisticated weapons late Thursday night in the Diyumbra area in Dima Hasao. Bullets were fired at the trucks and later the vehicles were set ablaze. The deceased have been identified as Gour Mazumder, Dilwar Hussain, Azgar Ali, Sikandar Ali and Dharmendra Kumar Prasad.

Police have recovered five charred bodies. Dima Hasao Superintendent of police Jayant Singh told ET, “The incident happened around 8.30 pm when trucks were moving with coal and clinker. There was a sudden fire and the drivers and handymen of the truck were killed.” The police have launched an operation.


“We have started an investigation into the incident,” said Singh.In May, security forces gunned down eight militants belonging to DNLA. The group has its presence in Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong districts of Assam and has recently killed some people.

Assam’s panchayat and rural development minister Ranjit Kumar Dass said the state government will ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
