Finalising a deal for Brahmos missiles with Indonesia will top the agenda of PM Narendra Modi's Jakarta trip in July second week in what can make SE Asia’s biggest state as the third client in the region for the missile after Philippines and Vietnam.

On this third Indonesia trip as the PM, Modi will seek to boost strategic partnership encompassing defence, maritime security and connectivity. Indonesia is India's biggest maritime neighbour and shares deep cultural bonds.

At the recent Shangri La dialogue in Singapore, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh referred to talks on BrahMos supersonic cruise missile deal with Indonesia which he said “are in their final stages.”


President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto who was the Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations in January 2025 is personally keen to take the partnership to the next level.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, was here for the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting (JCM), on Sunday to prepare the ground for the visit. Discussions in the JCM have focused on enhancing connectivity, maritime security and defence cooperation under their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

India-Indonesia bilateral trade reached $25 billion last year, as the both countries focus on supply chains, Digital Public Infrastructure, health, tourism and military collaboration. India and Indonesia are strengthening defence cooperation as part of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with a focus on maritime security and joint exercises.

Modi's visit to New Zealand, comes months after the conclusion of negotiations for a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The FTA aims to boost market access for goods and services, promote investment, and facilitate mobility for professionals, students and MSMEs. An India community event is planned in Auckland, comprising 15,000-20,000 members of the Indian diaspora. In Australia, focus will be on further firming up defence partnership in the Indo-Pacific region. Australia's National Defence Strategy 2026 has identified India as a top-tier security partner. Sydney may host official bilateral engagement with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Melbourne may host a diaspora gathering.
