The Delhi government is considering direct recruitment of former Agniveers into police and fire services
The proposal also included a 20% horizontal reservation for ex-Agniveers in the three services, with the earmarked vacancies to be adjusted within the existing reservation framework for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Economically Weaker Sections and the general category, the report said.
The move was being planned ahead of the completion of the first four-year Agnipath tenures in December 2026.
It said that Delhi's home department was working on amendments to recruitment rules on the directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs to create a route for the first batch of exiting Agniveers to enter government service.
Age relaxation for first batch
The first batch could receive an additional three-year age relaxation on top of the five-year relaxation already proposed by the Centre. This could allow eligible ex-Agniveers to apply for posts even when they were up to eight years above the prescribed upper age limit.
The proposed changes were expected to exempt eligible ex-Agniveers from the written examination as well as physical standard and physical efficiency tests. The exemptions were intended to ensure that candidates completing their military tenure did not lose out on government employment opportunities because of age or the conventional recruitment process.
According to the report, the recruitment could take place in two stages.
Vacancies earmarked for ex-Agniveers could initially be filled separately, with the remaining posts continuing to be recruited through the existing process.
If some of the reserved vacancies remained unfilled, they could later be taken up along with other vacancies, subject to the final recruitment rules and directions from the authorities, the report said.
Why ex-Agniveers are being considered
Agniveers are recruited under the Agnipath scheme for a four-year term in the armed forces. While a portion is retained for regular military service, the rest leave after completing their tenure and seek employment elsewhere. The proposed framework was expected to give the Delhi government access to a pool of personnel with military training and experience that could be used in policing, firefighting and home-guard duties.
The home department was in the process of amending the recruitment rules for the three services. The changes would require approval from the competent authorities before being formally notified by the Delhi government, The Times of India reported.
