New Delhi: India has called on Pakistan to end the "grave and ongoing human rights violations" in parts of Jammu and Kashmir under its illegal occupation.

Speaking at the UN Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate on 'The United Nations Organization: Looking into the Future', India's Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir "has been, is, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India."

"The people of Jammu and Kashmir exercise their fundamental rights in accordance with India's democratic traditions and constitutional framework. These are concepts alien to Pakistan," Harish said, urging Islamabad to end "repression, brutality, and illegal exploitation of resources" in the occupied areas where, he added, the population is in open revolt against Pakistan's military rule.

His remarks come amid continuing protests in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) over local grievances.

The envoy underlined India's commitment to Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam - the belief in the world as one family - and said this philosophy drives India's approach to justice, dignity, and prosperity for all. "It is why India continues to place faith in multilateralism, partnerships, and international cooperation," he noted.

Reflecting on the debate theme, Harish said the UN, founded after World War II as a "beacon of hope for international peace and security," now faces questions over its "relevance, legitimacy, credibility, and efficacy."

He credited the organisation for advancing decolonisation, enabling the emergence of new nation-states in the Global South, and setting ambitious goals for growth, social development, and addressing global challenges such as terrorism, pandemics, and climate change.
