Deployment of troops along LoC strengthened: Army
JAMMU: Deployment of troops along the Line of Control has been strengthened to thwart cross-border infiltration attempts with the snow starting to melt, a top Army commander said today.

"We are fully prepared to thwart any cross-border infiltration attempts along the LoC. As the snow has started melting, troops have been put on alert," General Officer Commanding-In-Chief, Northern Command, Lt Gen DS Hooda told reporters here.

"Deployment of troops along the LoC has been increased and the fence that suffered damage during floods is being repaired," he said.

The Army commander was responding to questions on possible infiltration bids from across the border at a function here to felicitate Ram Nath Meena, Divisional Traffic Manager of Northern Railway (Jammu), for his selfless dedication and professional service rendered.

"Infiltration is bit difficult along the LoC. But the floods has damaged the patches of fencing along the International Border which gives advantage to militants in their infiltration bids," Lt Gen Hooda said.

"We have ensured strictness and second tier of security. Police is also there. BSF has further strengthened its strategy to combat infiltration," he said.

The Army-OFB team began work a few years ago on the original designs.

There was a slight setback to the project when the barrel of a Dhanush prototype burst during firing trials at Pokhran in August 2013. But officials contend it was the use of "old ammunition with air bubbles" that led to the accident.
