Defence Ministry approves establishment of ‘BRO Cafes’ on 75 border roads in 12 States/UTs

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has approved the development contract of wayside amenities at 75 locations on various sections of roads with Border Roads Organisation (BRO) across 12 states/union territories, it said in a press release on Wednesday.

These are designed to give tourists access to essential amenities & comfort which will in-return increase economic activity in border regions, and create jobs for the local populace. These roadside amenities will be known as ‘BRO Cafes’.

The contract will have a 15-year term that may be later extended for an additional five years.


Approval has been given in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Manipur, Nagaland, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.

The provision of amenities such as two- and four-wheeler parking, a food court or restaurant, separate restrooms for men, women, and people with disabilities, first aid stations, and MI rooms is envisaged under this.

The plan calls for the development and operation of wayside facilities in public-private partnerships with agencies, on a licence basis, who will plan, construct, and run the facility in accordance with BRO criteria. Provided, a competitive approach will be used to choose the licensees.

However, it was recognised that there’s a need to establish multi-utility wayside amenities along the major tourist circuits in these regions, the BRO, by virtue of its presence in even the most isolated border regions, took it upon itself to open such facilities at remote places to provide conducive and comfortable transit of tourists on these roads located at harsh climatic and geographical conditions.

The BRO earlier, in addition to meeting strategic needs, has contributed to the socioeconomic development of the Northern and Eastern borders which led to an increase in tourists visiting these picturesque places that were previously unreachable.
