Coast Guard commissions ICGS Akshay, 4th Adamya-class FPV built by Goa Shipyard

The Indian Coast Guard on Saturday commissioned ICGS Akshay, the fourth vessel in the Adamya-class series of eight fast patrol vessels being built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the force, at a ceremony held at Goa Shipyard Limited's facility in Vasco.

The vessel was formally inducted into service in the presence of senior Coast Guard officials and government dignitaries, including Additional Secretary (Personnel), Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, Parama Sen; Indian Coast Guard Region (West) Commander Inspector General Bhisham Sharma; and Deputy Director General (HRD) Inspector General Jyotindra Singh.

Designated Yard 1273 in the eight-vessel series, ICGS Akshay was launched on January 6, 2025, along with the third vessel, Amulya, using GSL's ship-lift system. The vessel carries over 65 percent indigenous content and is equipped with advanced Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) propulsion systems. The Adamya-class vessels are the first in the Indian Coast Guard to be equipped with a CPP-based propulsion system, paired with two 3,000 kW diesel engines.

The vessels measure 52 metres in length with a displacement of 320 tonnes. Each vessel in the series is operated by a complement of six officers and 35 sailors, and is purpose-built for fisheries protection, Exclusive Economic Zone surveillance, coastal patrol, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search and rescue missions.

The weapon systems on the class include a 30mm CRN 91 naval gun and two 12. 7mm stabilised remote-controlled machine guns.

The vessel has been built under the Centre's Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. It will be commanded by Commandant (Junior Grade) Deepak Choubey, according to an official statement.

The broader contract for the eight-vessel Adamya-class series was concluded in March 2022, valued at Rs 473 crore. Of the eight vessels, the lead ship Adamya was commissioned on September 19, 2025, while the second vessel Akshar was commissioned at Karaikal, Puducherry, in October 2025. The third ship, Amulya, was commissioned in Goa in December 2025.

The commissioning of ICGS Akshay is part of the Coast Guard's ongoing fleet modernisation programme, the statement said.
