NEW DELHI: As part of its preparation to use expressways as emergency runways in war-like situations, the Indian Air Force (IAF) today conducted landing trails of fighter jets in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, today, four days before its November 21 exercise of landing fighter aircraft on Agra-Lucknow expressway.

Elaborate preparations have been made for the touch down of 11 IAF aircraft, which include its frontline fighter aircraft Sukhoi Su-30MKI and Dassault Mirage 2000. Today’s trials were the dress rehearsal before the final event. A 2-km stretch of the newly-built Lucknow-Agra expressway in Bangarmau city of Unnao district will be used for the landing exercise on November, 21.



In another such landing exercise, IAF had successfully landed Dassault Mirage-2000 fighter jet on the Yamuna expressway, near Raya village, Mathura in May last year.

Currently, many countries such as Pakistan, Sweden, Poland, Singapore have emergency landing facilities on expressways and highways.
