BEIJING: China will recruit more civilian personnel for jobs in the PLA, the world's largest standing army, and the Chinese People's Armed Police.

The spouses and offspring of military personnel who have fallen in the line of duty, and the spouses of those still in service will be eligible to apply to certain posts.

More positions will be made available for candidates with relevant work experience.

It is hoped that the drive will improve recruitment in remote areas and unpopular positions, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The announcement follows a recent decision by the government to lay off 300,000 troops by 2017 to further slim down the 2.3 million-strong People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The recruitment information will be publicised on Friday.
