China building massive naval ship that could displace US rival as world's biggest? Here's what we know so far

China is constructing what defence analysts believe could become the world's largest naval replenishment ship, a development that could significantly enhance the People's Liberation Army Navy's ability to support aircraft carrier strike groups during extended deployments far from home waters.

According to The War Zone (TWZ), satellite imagery of the vessel under construction at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) indicates that it is larger than China's existing Type 901 fast combat support ships. While Beijing has not officially confirmed details of the project, analysts say the ship's estimated dimensions suggest it could surpass the largest replenishment ships currently in service.

Satellite images indicate larger-than-Type 901 design

The vessel is being built at a shipyard on Longxue Island, southeast of Guangzhou, operated by the CSSC Offshore and Marine Engineering Company (COMEC), a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).


Satellite imagery suggests the ship measures about 270 metres in length and 37 metres in width. It appears to feature a forward superstructure with a large bridge and mast, along with a separate aft superstructure positioned behind the exhaust stacks.

The overall design resembles the People's Liberation Army Navy's existing Type 901 replenishment ships, although it appears significantly larger. China currently operates two Type 901 fast combat support ships, Hulunhu and Chaganhu, each measuring about 240 metres in length with a full-load displacement of around 45,000 tonnes. The navy also operates the smaller Type 903 replenishment ships.

Replenishment ships extend naval reach

Replenishment ships, also known as fast combat support ships, are auxiliary vessels that supply warships with fuel, ammunition, aviation fuel, food, fresh water, spare parts and other essential stores while they remain at sea.

These vessels enable aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and submarines to operate for longer periods without returning to port, significantly increasing a navy's operational range and endurance. Modern replenishment ships are equipped with multiple transfer stations, allowing them to refuel and resupply more than one vessel at the same time.

Could surpass US Navy's largest logistics ships

The US Navy currently operates the world's largest combat logistics fleet through its Military Sealift Command. Its Supply-class fast combat support ships have a full-load displacement of about 48,500 tonnes.

If estimates based on the satellite imagery are confirmed, China's new vessel could exceed the displacement of the Supply-class ships and become the world's largest naval replenishment ship.

For comparison, the Indian Navy's largest replenishment vessels are the Deepak-class fleet tankers, each with a full-load displacement of around 28,000 tonnes. India is also constructing five new fleet support ships.

Part of China's expanding blue-water navy ambitions

COMEC's portfolio primarily focuses on commercial vessels, including oil tankers, liquefied natural gas carriers and cargo ships. In recent years, however, the shipyard has also gained attention for building vessels with military or dual-use applications.

Analysts believe the new replenishment ship reflects China's broader effort to strengthen the logistics network supporting the People's Liberation Army Navy as it expands aircraft carrier operations and long-range deployments beyond its coastal waters.
