BSF kills two suspected cattle smugglers in North 24 Parganas
KOLKATA: Two suspected cattle smugglers were killed at the border outpost near Swarupnagar in North 24 Parganas district in the early hours of November 26 following a clash between the BSF jawans and the smugglers. A BSF jawan opened fire in “self defence” when a group of cattle smugglers were trying to cross over. The BSF patrol chased the group of smugglers, who attacked the BSF patrol party with country made weapons. During the clash, the smugglers tried to drag a jawan inside Bangladesh territory.

The group of smugglers attacked the BSF jawan with sharp weapons. In retaliation the jawan charged chilly grenade, but it failed to stop the attackers. The BSF jawan later fired a few rounds from his rifle, said a senior BSF official.

“The jawan tried to dissuade them by charging chilly grenade. But the attackers continued to attack with sharp weapons. The jawan did not have a pump-action gun and had to fire from his rifle in self defence,” the official said. “The victims are yet to be identified. As of now, nobody from Indian villages claimed the body. So, the victims might be Bangladeshi nationals. We will hold a flag meeting with the Border Guard Bangladesh soon,” he said.
