SRINAGAR: A BSF jawan and a nine-year-old child were killed and nine civilians injured during exchange of fire between India and Pakistan along the Jammu border on Monday.

The firing from the Pakistani side started at around 6:40 pm on Sunday and continued till 1:30 pm on Monday in RS Pura, Arnia, Suchetgarh, Kanachak, Pargwal sub sectors of Jammu district. BSF officials confirmed that Pakistani troops targetted over 20 border outposts and civilian villages.

“There was shelling of 82 mm mortar shells and heavy automatic weapon fire which was responded to,” DIG, BSF (Jammu Frontier) Dharmender Pareekh told ET.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is on a visit to Bahrain, spoke to BSF DG KK Sharma who apprised him of the situation in border areas of Jammu region. “The BSF is capable of giving befitting reply,” he tweeted.

“I salute the bravery and sacrifice of BSF jawan Sushil Kumar who was martyred in RS Pura sector of Jammu region last night,” Singh added. According to BSF officials, four to five Pakistani rangers were injured in firing from Indian side.
