NSA Ajit Doval on Wednesday called for urgent reform of the multilateral system in order to address global issues with credibility, equity and accountability and need to bolster cooperation against terrorism without any reservations.

Doval made these remarks while addressing BRICS NSA meet in virtual format. He further welcomed the cooperation ongoing in the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group, ET has learnt. He also laid emphasis on the importance of trusted and resilient supply chains amid disruptions in supply chains following Covid.

Doval further called for the need to continue cooperation against the challenges of pandemics and climate change, sources said.

The Indian NSA further referred to importance of BRICS cooperation in the areas of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) security (preventing its use by terrorists), outer space and maritime security

This was an important meeting in the run-up to BRICS Summit to be held in virtual format on June 24.

Yang Jiechi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, chaired the 12th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisers comprising Indian NSA AK Doval and Russian NSA Nikolay Patrushev.

The BRICS counter-terror action plan that was discussed is aimed at further strengthening result oriented cooperation between BRICS countries in areas such as preventing and combating terrorism, radicalisation, financing of terrorism, misuse of internet by terrorists, curbing travel of terrorists, border control, protection of soft targets, information sharing, capacity building, international and regional cooperation, officials said.

The BRICS’ Counter-Terror strategy, adopted at the 2020 summit under Russian chairship and building on the plan initiated under Brazil’s chairship in 2019, had put the onus on China to effectively fight cross-border terrorism instead of shielding Islamabad, in what was meant to strengthen India's long-standing demand for a united front against the menace. The strategy to which China was also a party calls for 'rejection of double standards on countering terrorism and extremism conducive to terrorism'. It was decided at the 2020 Summit to utilise BRICS’ Counter-Terrorism Working Group to strengthen intelligence and information sharing and cooperation on terrorist organisations listed by the UNSC. The strategy also called for broadening BRICS counter-terrorism cooperation with the United Nations, as well as the G-20 and the FATF.
