Tensions erupted at the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Malda district when verbal clash erupted between Border Security Force (BSF) personnel with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) over ongoing fencing activities. The incident occurred near Sukdebpur village as BSF jawans worked on the Indian side, prompting objections from the BGB.

The altercation escalated as local villagers gathered to support the BSF, chanting slogans such as “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” “Vande Mataram,” and “Jai Shri Ram.” Videos of the incident have since gone viral on social media.

Disruption resolved through border protocols

As per reports, the dispute was resolved swiftly after the Indian side reassured the BGB that the fencing project had been pre-approved by both nations. The BSF assured the BGB that the work had been pre-approved by both countries. The work resumed shortly after the interruption, following standard border management protocols.

Political response highlights nationalist sentiment
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari praised the villagers and the BSF for their reaction, emphasizing the role of public support in maintaining national security. Sharing the viral video on social media platform X, Adhikari said, “The local Indian citizens along with the BSF personnel scared them off and made them realize that no nuisance will be tolerated when it comes to national security. Chants of Bharat Mata Ki Jai, Vande Mataram, and Jai Shree Ram were reverberating.”

Incident amid migrant crackdown
The border clash comes as Indian authorities intensify efforts to address the illegal stay of Bangladeshi migrants. Numerous arrests have been made in major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, with those apprehended being deported to Bangladesh.
