'Fidayeen' attack on army camp foiled; 4 soldiers, 2 ultras killed

Four armymen and two infiltrators were killed on Thursday morning as forces foiled a 'Fidayeen' attack on an Army camp in Darhal area of Rajouri in Jammu division. The attack took place between 3:30 am and 4:00 am, when two infiltrators attempted to enter the Army camp located in Parghal area and threw grenades at the sentry posts on the periphery of the camp. The Army camp is 30 km from Rajouri town.

The two attackers engaged in an exchange of fire with the forces and both were killed around 6:00 am. Six armymen were injured, four of whom died. Army officials said the duo had planned to take advantage of darkness and foliage to enter the camp, but failed to execute their plan.

The armymen killed in the attack were identified as Subedar Rajendra Prasad, Rifleman Manoj Kumar, Rifleman Nishant Malik and Rifleman Lakshmanan D. The identity of the two infiltrators is yet to be ascertained but police officials claim that they are most likely foreigners and associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba.


"They had planned a suicide attack and tried to inflict maximum casualty, but the alert armymen managed to kill both of them on the periphery of the camp and avoided any major damage," said Muhammad Aslam, SSP of Rajouri district. The Army officials informed that they recovered two AK 47 rifles, nine magazines, 300 rounds, five grenades and other administrative stores.

J&K LG Manoj Sinha and other leaders condemned the attack and paid tributes to the armymen killed in the attack. Former CM of J&K, Omar Abdullah, said that he was very sorry to hear about the death of soldiers.
