KOLKATA: Eastern Army commander Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi today reviewed the security environment and operations were carried out in Manipur to combat militancy in the affected areas.

During a visit to the Leimakhong Garrison in Manipur, Bakshi was briefed by GOC Red Shield Division on prevailing security situation in the area of responsibility, an official statement said.

This was the commander's first visit to Manipur after taking charge on August 1.

He was accompanied by Lt Gen Bipin Rawat, GOC 3 Corps.

The statement said Bakshi directed all ranks to ensure people-friendly operations in maintaining normalcy in the area and emphasized on the need for highest standards of military ethos in conduct of justified operations in the North-Eastern state.

He expressed satisfaction and complimented all ranks of the Division for their all round endeavors to effectively combat insurgency in the state, it added.

A fortuitous right turn taken by the three terrorists inside the Dinanagar police compound towards the near-empty police barracks rather than a bustling residential police complex on the left marked the attack in Gurdaspur on Monday.

As did the death of SP Baljit Singh around noon that ratcheted the encounter to a kill all operation, and the two light machine guns (LMGs) subsequently fitted on an adjoining hospital even as patients and doctors ran for cover in the crossfire during the 10-hour-long Punjab Police operation.
