Army chief takes stock of security scenario in Assam, Arunachal & Manipur

The Chief was accompanied by the Eastern Army Commander and the Corps Commander visited Tawang and the forward areas in Western Arunachal.

This was General Rawat's first visit to the Eastern Command after taking over as the Army Chief.
GUWAHATI: Army chief General Bipin Rawat on Tuesday made his first visit to the Eastern Command after taking over as the Army Chief.

The Chief was accompanied by the Eastern Army Commander and the Corps Commander visited Tawang and the forward areas in Western Arunachal. He was also briefed by the Corps Commander on the security situation of the area, both external threat and internal security point of view.

United Liberation Front of Western South East Asia (UNLFW), an umbrella organisation of North-eastern militants, had killed two Assam Rifles jawans and injured two others in Jairampur along Assam Arunachal Pradesh border on Sunday.


General Rawat has himself commanded a Corps in the Eastern Command and is well acquainted with the nuances of operational scenario here. He was satisfied with the operational preparedness of Gajraj Corps. General Rawat left Tezpur for Imphal before moving to Delhi

He also visited the strategic Gajraj Corps on the eve of the Republic Day. Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi, GOC-in-C Eastern Command and Lt Gen AS Bedi, GOC Gajraj Corps received the General.

In Manipur, tankers carrying emergency fuel supply for Imphal valley was attacked by militants. As soon as the convey reached Awankhu village in Noney district, militant fired upon the tankers, two tankers were riddled by bullets but no one was hurt.

In blockade-ravaged Manipur, Indian Air Force airlifted six diesel tankers with a total capacity of 96 kilolitres from Guwahati to Imphal on Monday

Defence sources said that C- 17 heavylift transport aircraft was deployed for the purpose. United naga council has clamped economic blockade on two highways since November 1 last year following which there is severe shortage of fuel and essential commodities.

Meanwhile a cadre of Khaplang faction of NSCN was apprehended from Longkhim town in nagaland by Assam Rifles along with Nagaland Police with IED. The individual was identified as Self Styled Lieutenant Yantril Sangtam, was in possession of an IED with a detonator, a reserve detonator.
