Anti-drone system to be deployed on borders: Amit Shah

Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that an anti-drone system will be deployed soon on the country's borders to strengthen the security system. He was chairing the 31st meeting of the Northern Zonal Council in Amritsar, Punjab, which was attended by chief ministers of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh along with lieutenant governors of Delhi, J&K, Ladakh and administrator of Chandigarh.

"The government has been successful in cracking down on narcotics and terrorism. The Modi government is committed to strengthening the security system on the border and soon the anti-drone system will be deployed...," Shah said.

Punjab, which shares a border with Pakistan, has seen a rise in the number of drones being used for smuggling arms and narcotics.


The Zonal Council meeting discussed over a total 28 issues, including some crucial topics concerning the member states in particular and the country as a whole. Issues related to sharing of inter-state river waters, coverage of villages by bank branches, effective implementation of direct benefit transfer for social sector schemes, issues relating to Punjab University, among others were discussed.

During the meeting, Shah assured all possible help from the Centre to the Himachal Pradesh government to deal with the flood situation and said the whole country was standing by Himachal in the time of crisis.

Shah said the majority of personnel in the central armed police forces and Army come from states and Union territories in the Northern Zonal Council. He urged states to resolve their water sharing disputes with an open mind and mutual discussion.
