Another Indian killed fighting for Russian Army in Ukraine

An Indian national recruited by the Russian army has been killed and another has sustained severe injuries in Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The Ministry of External Affairs has taken up the matter strongly with the Russian government

The ministry has reiterated its demand for early release of all Indians recruited by the Russian army.



The family members of Binil Babu, 32, from Thrissur in Kerala, were informed that he and a relative were injured in a drone attack. They were later informed that Babu had died while the relative was undergoing treatment after suffering severe injuries."We have learnt of the unfortunate death of an Indian national from Kerala who had apparently been recruited to serve in the Russian army. Another Indian national from Kerala, who was similarly recruited, has been injured and is receiving treatment in a hospital in Moscow," the MEA spokesperson said.


India's embassy in Moscow is in touch with both families and is helping them in every possible way. The ministry, he said, is working with Russian authorities for early transportation of the body to India and has also sought "early discharge and repatriation to India" of the injured person.

According to official data, nine Indians died while serving in the Russian army in the last few months. Babu's death has taken the toll to 10.

In October, foreign secretary Vikram Misri had said 85 Indians had been discharged from the Russian military and efforts were on to secure the release of 20 more.
