Amid aggressive protests across the country over the Agnipath military recruitment scheme, Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Friday asserted that it is a transformational step that could provide a great opportunity for the youth to serve the country.

The Agnipath scheme is a transformational scheme and it is a made in India and a made for India scheme, Indian Navy Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral R. Hari Kumar said in an interview with the news agency ANI.

Talking about the current situation and ongoing protests across the country which have turned violent in some states, the Navy Chief said that he did not expect that something of this sort would happen.

"I didn't anticipate protests like this and want to tell those protesting that do not be violent and remain peaceful", he added.

In an indirect appeal to the youth the chief said that they should read and understand the Agnipath scheme as this is an opportunity to serve the nation.

Talking about his contribution in the culmination of the scheme, the Navy Chief said that he was part of the initial planning team and worked on it for almost a year and a half. Now, we see the scheme coming to its completion and introduction into the armed forces, he added.
