IMPHAL: Eighty-seven bomb-shells, believed to be of World War II period, have been found at the border town of Moreh during excavation work for construction of a power sub-station.

A senior police officer said the bombs were dug out by labourers yesterday at Chanou locality of Moreh, bordering Myanmar, and is believed to be dating back to the World War 2 period when Japanese troops came to the country in 1944.

Further digging was immediately called off and state forces were guarding the site since last night.

The digging resumed this morning after bomb experts rushed from Imphal.

The recovered explosives were taken to Moreh police station for defusal, the officer said.

The ' Battle of Imphal' was a decisive victory for the allies (British India) against the Japanese forces in 1944.
