750 times bigger than Pentagon: Egypt planning a massive 22000-acre armed forces headquarters called 'The Octagon'
Egypt has unveiled its colossal State Strategic Command Headquarters, dubbed 'The Octagon,' a sprawling military complex dwarfing the Pentagon in size. Inaugurated by President El Sisi, this advanced facility in the New Administrative Capital cent...

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi inaugurated the facility in Egypt's New Administrative Capital on Saturday after signing its founding charter and raising the armed forces flag. The complex will serve as the central military and defence headquarters for the Egyptian Armed Forces.
Spanning around 22,000 acres, the State Strategic Command Headquarters comprises 13 integrated strategic and logistical zones, making it the largest defence and administrative complex in the Middle East, according to Egypt's State Information Service.
Larger than the Pentagon
The Octagon has drawn comparisons with the Pentagon because of its strategic role rather than its eight-sided architecture. While the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, serves as the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, The Octagon has been built to centralise Egypt's military leadership, operational planning, intelligence, secure communications and crisis management within a single command structure.
The Pentagon building covers 29 acres, including its five-acre central courtyard. Including the surrounding reservation and central plaza, the entire Pentagon complex spans between 34 and 41 acres. By comparison, The Octagon occupies approximately 22,000 acres, giving it a footprint roughly 750 times larger than the Pentagon.
Egypt's president calls it a major step for military command
During the inauguration, Sisi described the headquarters as "a towering national edifice" and said it represented "a significant leap" in Egypt's command, control and operations management systems. He said the facility has been equipped with advanced technological infrastructure, secure communication systems and enhanced information gathering and analysis capabilities. According to Sisi, the headquarters is designed not only to manage military operations but also to strengthen the state's ability to respond to challenges and exceptional circumstances.
The ceremony also marked the first time in more than a decade that the Egyptian president, a former army officer, appeared in public wearing military uniform.
Designed as an integrated defence city
Unlike a conventional military headquarters, Egyptian officials describe The Octagon as a miniature administrative and defence city that combines command functions, logistics, training facilities and national emergency management within a single secure complex. The headquarters features eight interconnected octagonal buildings surrounding two central command structures. The design is intended to symbolise unity and integrated command while combining elements of traditional Egyptian architecture with modern military infrastructure and digital technologies.
The complex offers more than 50.5 million square feet of floor space across multiple buildings.
Advanced command and communication systems
According to the State Information Service, the headquarters is equipped with advanced command, control, communications and artificial intelligence (C4I/AI) systems that enable real-time information sharing, quicker decision-making and coordinated operations across all branches of the armed forces. The facility has also been designed to improve coordination between the military and civilian government agencies during national emergencies by supporting integrated data sharing and decision-making during crises, disasters and other national security situations.
Part of Egypt's new administrative capital project
The inauguration forms part of Egypt's broader strategy to relocate key sovereign institutions to the New Administrative Capital while strengthening military and administrative capabilities through advanced technologies and integrated command systems. With the opening of The Octagon, Egypt aims to modernise its defence architecture through a technology-driven command centre intended to improve military readiness, strengthen joint-force coordination and enhance its response to evolving regional and global security challenges.
