Suicide attack foiled on CRPF camp, four militants killed
The heavily armed militants tried to enter the camp of 45 Battalion CRPF at Sumbal in Bandipora at around 4:10 AM by opening fire at the sentry post, a police official said.
The four militants opened fire on the CRPF’s 45th battalion at about 3:30 am and made an attempt to cut the fence and barge inside the camp.
J&K police chief SP Vaid said that the four rifles and huge ammunition recovered from the spot and preliminary investigations suggest that the militants were foreigners. However, he said, the final identity of the militants was yet to be ascertained and investigation was going on.
The initial exchange of the fire, CRPF personnel posted in the camp said, continued lasted about 25 minutes.
Firing started again when dawn broke and continued for a few more minutes, after which the security forces recovered the bodies of all four militants.
The militants, a CRPF officer said, were specifically targeting a building near gate number two, where commandos, who had recently come back after special training, were staying.
“The morale of security forces is very high and terrorists will get befitting reply wherever they will try to attack,” Vaid told media persons.
According to police spokesperson, four AK rifles, 12 AK magazines, 140 AK rounds, 07 UBGL grenades and nine hand grenades were recovered from the encounter site.
Immediately after the attack, intense clashes broke out between the civilians and security forces in the area. Tear-gas canisters, stun grenades and pepper gas were used to disperse the protesting civilians, who pelted stones at the forces.
The authorities shut down mobile phone services and internet in Sumbal area to avoid any flow of rumours and escalation in protests.
