SRINAGAR: Two persons were killed and two others injured on Tuesday when suspected militants attacked J&K administration’s outreach programme in Anantnag of southern Kashmir.

The attack on ‘Back to Village’ gathering took place outside Panchayat Ghar in Hakura village of Bodasgam, where militants allegedly threw a grenade when the officials and local organisers were leaving the venue and opened fire as well.

Those killed in the attack were identified as Peer Syed Rafia, a sarpanch who also ran a non-governmental organisation in Anantnag, and Zahoor Ahmad, an employee of the state agriculture department. “The militants were probably waiting in ambush near the venue,” a police official told ET on condition of anonymity.

The attack took place a day after former Union minister Yashwant Sinha-led Concerned Group of Citizens stated that the situation was not normal in Kashmir. The administration had not allowed Sinha’s team to visit southern Kashmir citing threat of an impending militant attack.
