The attack took place in Kandizal area of Pampore when motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on a road opening party of the CRPF and fled from the scene. Five CRPF men were injured and two of them succumbed at 92 base hospital in Badamibagh area of Srinagar.
Inspector General of police Vijay Kumar said the attackers were associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba and a manhunt to neutralize them has been launched. One of the attackers has been identified as Saifullah of Pakistan, he said.
The two CRPF men killed were identified as constable Shailendra Pratap Singh and Dhirendra Tripathi.
“Highway always remains on target and we don't retaliate due to presence of civilians,” Kumar told media persons. After the incident, traffic on the highway was stopped for some time.
The armed forces cordoned the whole area after the incident but the attackers had managed to flee from there.
Police officials said around 200 militants are active in Kashmir and that 90 of them are foreigners.
