Trust The Wanderers to treat office-weary drones to a good outing
The Wanderers have designed their own team-building games, but they make sure this kind of learning happens in a fun environment: on a beach, or a mountain-top or an exotic island.
The travel company took the 40-odd employees of the channel to Cape Town for some sky-diving. The employees still rate this as one of their best company-sponsored holidays. When it comes to travel of all kinds, Abhik Dutta, Ashis Das and Rajinder Singh, who run The Wanderers, are the go-to guys. They’ve planned every conceivable sort of trip for corporates.
“The trip must have a purpose, whether it’s team-building or just a novel thing,” says Dutta. “It must take care of the shoppingeating-nightlife needs of the group, but also have a ‘wow’ factor. Most of all, it must be fun.” The Wanderers handle at least 60-80 corporate groups every year.
Having recently launched a team-building arm called OWL (outdoors wilderness learning) and an entertainment sub-company called Ace of Wands, they now look to do “small things differently” as well. A day-long conference could end with a performance by a wellknown rock band, a ballet or a one-act play by a professional group.
“After a day of brainstorming, the most common question put to us was: ‘What is the evening’s entertainment?,” says Sen. “We understood, then, that we needed to account for every minute of every trip, and make sure it was packed with all kinds of fun.”
Most people don’t realise it, but the setting matters too. The Wanderers have designed their own team-building games like Mindless Football (make up the rules as you go), Animal Instincts (where you can only communicate with animal sounds) or Magic Carpet, but they make sure this kind of learning happens in a fun environment: On a beach, or a mountain-top or an exotic island.
“It doesn’t matter what the goal is,” says Dutta. “You might want to foster a culture of collaboration, better communication and achievement at your organisation. If you couch it in fun, you will get the message across faster and more easily.”
