The world roots for Ambani & Ambani

Many Indians joined ET to raise a toast to the Ambanis in a euphoric display of the spirit of can-do.

NEW DELHI: They are the cheer-leaders of India’s fast-lane future. And this week saw them rooting for the Guru-bhais of growth. Indians across the world joined ET to raise a toast to the Brothers Ambani in a euphoric display of the spirit of can-do. There were thousands of congratulatory messages from non-resident Indians (including mails from places as far-flung as Helsinki and Lagos), rah-rah rooting by readers across the globe, personal anecdotes, contrarian views, charity concerns...in short, the whole shebang.

All this is response to the report headlined “Ambani Vs Ambani or Ambani & Ambani” that appeared in ET on March 19, which pointed out that the combined wealth of the Ambani brothers made them the second richest business family in the world.

Take the message from Milind K Oza of Bethesda MD, who wrote about how he first heard of Dhirubhai Ambani. “I was travelling with a lady named Shakuntalaben Parghi. I was about to depart for the US in 1980 and she insisted that I should go and see Mr Dhirubhai Ambani. I did not. And I still regret it...”

For others like Sreenu Pasunuri of Hyderabad and RS Parthasarthi of Singapore, the Ambani achievements are both aspirational and inspirational. “I respect the Ambanis for their courage and commitment to business; they are the creators of not just wealth but a strong and confident India,” wrote Pasunuri. Dittoed Parthasarthi: “I feel very proud at your achievements and growth opportunity you have created for India and Indians. You showed how to be successful in an environment which is not always business friendly.”

The demographic too was about as varied as the geographical spread of the messages. There were “you-are-my-idols” messages from MBAs like Venky from Kuwait, an all-the-best from ex-Reliance employee-turned MP from Indore Vineet Agrawal, applause from current Reliance employees like Rajesh B Birare of Mumbai and a top-the-rich-list target from the likes of Suresh Kumar of Chennai and Anil of Mumbai.

Enterprising Indians, both resident and otherwise, seemed to be cheering the Ambani build-from-scratch story as the template of a magical makeover. As Navinsheth wrote from Richmond, the Ambani success story helped change the way people looked at India and Indians. “I have learned a lot from Dhirubhai as he happened to sit with my father-in-law on the board of Sasmira in the early 70s. He put India on the world map from a country of snake charmers to (a country of) wealth builders.”

As for the road ahead, no one expects it to go anywhere but to the very top of the global pecking order. As Kiran wrote from Bangalore, “I would like the Global Indian Takeover to become a reality in all spheres — business, culture, etc!”
