Automation:

intelligent software systems that can sift through data and come up with insights that can aid or replace human decision-making. Can raise the productivity of people but also threaten jobs.

Internet of things:

A system of connected devices capable of collecting information and acting on them without human intervention. Often refers to an ideal situation, but applications abound even in a less-than-ideal state.

Cloud technologies:

Hardware or software provided over a network as a service. It enables the progress of several other disruptive technologies in this list by reducing costs and increasing resource mobility.

INTERMEDIATE IMPACT

Next-generation genomics:

The ability to store energy efficiently and extract it later quickly. Advances are necessary for increasing use of electric vehicles or renewable energy. Batteries are improving, and other ways of massive storage are emerging.

Renewable energy:

Ways of producing energy without depleting natural resources or impacting the environment too much. Solar and wind are the leading candidates, but biofuels and geothermal are also promising.

LONG TERM IMPACT

Advanced robotics:

Nextgeneration robots that are capable of doing most household tasks, perform surgery, or have some ability to sense their environment and take decisions.

3-D printing:

The ability to print out a three-dimensional product based on a virtual design blueprint, just the way we print on paper now. Future printers could produce complex objects using different materials. Advanced materials: substances with properties superior to that of currentlyused ones.

These properties include high strength or durability, or the ability to change shape or heal themselves. Autonomous vehicles: vehicles that can drive itself without a driver. Commercial technologies exist to assist human drivers, but this assistance will be gradually replaced by full control on a highway.
