The Jio IPO separate queue explained: How RIL investors can double their chances of allotment
Reliance Jio plans to launch its IPO with a unique bidding option exclusively for shareholders of Reliance Industries Limited. This specialized queue allows these investors to participate in dual bidding, minimizing application rejections. Eligibl...

The most compelling feature of this structural carve-out is the dual-bidding allowance. Within the exclusive shareholder reservation portion, individual applications are strictly capped at a maximum of ₹2 lakh.1 However, participating in this quota does not lock an investor out of the broader public pools. According to the IPO guidelines, an eligible RIL shareholder can submit a bid under the reserved quota and simultaneously place a distinct application in either the general retail or the non-institutional investor (NII) category.1 Crucially, from a regulatory standpoint, combining a reservation bid with a standard retail or NII bid is not classified as a "multiple bid," meaning neither application will face rejection on those grounds.1
To utilize this separate queue, the parameters are highly specific. The draft prospectus states an investor must be an individual or a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) public shareholder of the parent company, RIL.1 Timing is the ultimate deciding factor; the record date for determining eligible shareholders is firmly fixed as the day the Red Herring Prospectus (RHP) is formally filed with the market regulator.1 This mechanism effectively shuts the door on market arbitrageurs who might hope to purchase RIL shares at the eleventh hour merely to qualify for the reservation. Once the RHP is submitted, the eligibility window definitively closes.
The draft document also outlines a clear spillover mechanism to manage any potential under-subscription within these protected categories. In the event that the RIL shareholder quota is not fully exhausted, the unsubscribed shares will initially be reallocated to the employee reservation portion.1 Should shares still remain unallocated after that shift, they will subsequently flow down to the general retail and non-institutional categories in a predefined 70:30 ratio.1 Furthermore, Reliance has designated a separate quota for its employees. For personnel who simultaneously qualify as employees and hold RIL shares, the company has structured a combined category, allowing them to optimize their investment footprint across multiple buckets.2
Deploying a targeted separate queue to anchor a massive issue has a highly successful market precedent in India. During its historic 2022 mega-IPO, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) introduced a dedicated 10% reservation for its existing policyholders, supported by an extensive nationwide PAN-linking campaign.3 This strategic pivot paid massive dividends; the policyholder portion was a resounding success, eventually being subscribed over 6 times, as reported by The Economic Times.3 By instituting a parallel structure for RIL shareholders, Reliance Jio is leveraging a thoroughly tested capital markets playbook to guarantee a phenomenal debut.
