'Team needs right dose of motivation'

A team actually remains healthy only when you give it the right dose of motivation at regular intervals.

NEW DELHI: If your team gets the right food and nutrition, you may think you’ve a healthy team in place. That may be true in the physical sense, but a team actually remains healthy only when you give it the right dose of motivation at regular intervals.

“That’s because motivation is nutritive and not curative — it’s not a one-off medicine, but a part of the meal,” Michael A Podolinsky, a celebrated speaker on leadership development told a rapt audience of 150-odd participants at Indiatimes HR Strategy Summit in Delhi on Tuesday.

“What is rewarded will be repeated,” Podolinsky said. “So if you want to appreciate the performance of the team members, take note of the specifics.”

Participants attending the summit are from across industry verticals — from BFSI to education. The summit is being organised in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore by Indiatimes in association with Business &Economy, a business magazine.

Robert Fuller, former physicist and the man behind HR Rankism principle, took the discussion further when he spoke on the abuse of power inherent in rankism. In his famous book Somebodies and Nobodies: Overcoming the Abuse of Rank, Fuller has discussed rankism, a deeply rooted group of practices often used by those in power to intimidate those seen as holding less power.

“When we expose the abuse of power inherent in rankism, and ultimately deem it as repugnant as we do racism and sexism, will we be able to fulfill the democratic promise of a society — and world — that provides opportunity and recognition for all its members,” he said.
