Tata Sons threatens to sue ex-GEC member Nirmalya Kumar for 'disparaging' remarks

MUMBAI: Tata Sons threatened legal proceedings against ex-GEC member Nirmalya Kumar for making disparaging remarks about the Tata Group and divulging future strategy. The holding company of Tata Group also asked for an apology.

The photo of the notice was tweeted by Kumar on micro-blogging site Twitter on Saturday.

"We call upon you to issue an unconditional apology to the company, withdraw your disparaging remarks about Tata Group from social media and forthwith cease and desist from making any further public statements or disclosing any information...." the company write in the notice.



"If you fail to do so then please take notice that the company would initiate legal proceedings against you, both civil and criminal," the notice added.

It added that the company takes strong objection to Kumar's remarks about the company and Tata Group reserves a right to claim damages for the same.

Tata Sons, in a reply to ET's emailed query, acknowledged the notice to Kumar.

The Group Spokesperson Debasis Ray said that while leaving the services of the company, Kumar had given an undertaking that he would refrain from publishing or circulating any material that may directly or indirectly refer to the company or the Tata group in general, which constitutes disclosure of confidential or proprietary information and and not disparage the group and its people.

Ray said Kumar has breached these obligations.
