New Delhi: Former Religare Enterprises chief Sunil Godhwani was stopped at Delhi airport from flying overseas on Thursday. He is being questioned by the Economic Offences Wing and is likely to be taken into custody, EThas learnt.

Immigration authorities said Godhwani was slated to fly to the US. Sources said the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) had sought a look-out circular (LOC) against him.

In December last year, Religare Enterprises and its subsidiary Religare Finvest Limited (RFL) had filed a complaint against Godhwani and its erstwhile promoters Malvinder Singh and Shivinder Singh under the Companies Act provisions with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

The complaint stated RFL had sanctioned loans to companies known to the Singh brothers but were never repaid. The loans stand at Rs 2,397 crore, with Rs 415 crore as interest, to 19 entities.

Godhwani didn't respond to phone calls and messages while a person close to Godhwani said he was not allowed to fly out of the country.
