PUNE: The Shri Pandurang Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana (SSK) from Solapur has earned carbon credits (certified emission reduction - CER) worth Rs 4 crore. The sugar mills earned the carbon credits for generating baggase-based electricity. Shri Pandurang SSK was the first co-operative mill in the country to register with the United Nations to trade carbon credits in 2006.
This is the second time, it has earned carbon credits for the renewable energy generated from baggase, the by-product of sugar production. The co-operative has exported four crore units of electricity. ""We will sell the CERs as and when the market rate becomes attractive. Right now, the CER rates are not so good,"" said KN Nibe, managing director, Shre Pandurang SSK.
