In a world where feminism is gaining currency, State Bank of India’s first woman chief Arundhati Bhattacharya does not prefer to wear the gender bias on her sleeve. There is instruction going around the bank that the post should be addressed only as ‘chairman’ and not as either ‘chairperson’ or ‘chairwoman’.

Incidentally, the day Bhattacharya took charge at the bank, she had handed out visiting cards to people with ‘Chairperson’ written on it. Though there is debate about when the word chairperson got into the dictionary, it became popular once Ms Indira Gandhi became the ‘chairperson’ of the Commonwealth.
