New Delhi: RMZ, Asia's leading integrated alternative-assets platform, is partnering with Colt Data Centres to set up a 1.25-GW data centre with an investment of ₹1.77 lakh crore at Anandapuram in Visakhapatnam.

The Andhra Pradesh government's State Investment Promotion Committee (SIPC) approved the project last week. According to highly placed sources, about 200 acres of land have been identified at Jagnadhapuram village in Visakhapatnam district.

The data centre project has fructified just seven months after RMZ signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh government to invest $10 billion in mixed-use, digital, industrial and logistics infrastructure projects at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The data centre project will be undertaken in five phases between 2027 and 2036. The first phase is likely to be commissioned within 37 months.

With fast-track approvals, Andhra Pradesh is emerging as a leading hub for artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure. This is the fifth data centre project approved in the state and is likely to be the second largest after Reliance Industries' data centre.

In an interview with ET, Andhra Pradesh IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh had said the state aims to set up data centres with a total capacity of 6 GW.

So far, the state government has approved a 1-GW data centre cluster by Google, a 1.5-GW project by Reliance Industries, a 500-MW facility by Sify, and a 300-MW project by CtrlS.

The approval for the RMZ-Colt data centre will take the state closer to its target, with total approved capacity reaching 4.55 GW.

In terms of capacity, the Reliance Industries data centre is likely to emerge as the biggest in the country, eclipsing Google's 1-GW project in the region. Google's data centre cluster, which is in the initial stages of implementation, has brought India its largest foreign direct investment (FDI), worth $15 billion.
