Ratan Tata stands by his statement on Noel
Rata Tata stands by his statement to The Times, London, that Noel Tata may not have acquired the necessary experience to succeed him.
Clark said that apart from Tata's purported comments on Mukesh Ambani's opulent residence in south Mumbai as the work ethics of the management of Corus Steel and Jaguar Land Rover, which were taken out of context, none of the other statements attributed to Tata was disputed, including his observations on Noel Tata.
The Times article said: "His ( Ratan Tata's) half-brother, Noel Tata, is among the candidates, but it is possible that the committee undertaking the search will plump for someone outside the family, possibly someone outside India, conceivably even someone who isn't of Indian origin.
"Ratan Tata says that he is not involved in the search for his successor, but suggests that he does not think his half-brother, who only took over as head of international operations last year, is ready for the role. 'I think if he is to run this he should have greater exposure than he has had. Partly his not having it has been his own choice'."
Christopher Clark also said the interview-based article was now a "dispute" between the Tatas and The Times. The former have written to the latter, but were yet to receive a reply.
The Times, however, told TOI: "The statement from Tata Sons makes clear that their concern is with the way some might interpret the comments and not with our accuracy." In effect, the paper denied any incorrectness on its part.
The Tatas, on the other hand, maintained in respect of Times' piece that it was "misleading and mischievous". Indeed, they virtually threatened: "We have already registered our protest with the concerned publication and will continue to pursue measures against the incorrect impressions being sought to be created."
