R S Sharma selected for ONGC top job

NEW DELHI: R S Sharma, whose appointment to the top job at Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) was vetoed by the Prime Minister's Office a few months ago, was today again selected for the post of chairman and managing director.

A head-hunting committee, headed by PESB chairman N K Sinha, recommended Sharma, who has been acting chairman of ONGC since May 25 last year, for the job while preferring former bureaucrat Najeeb Jung as its second best choice.

PESB sources said of the 28 candidates called for the interviews over the past two days, 26 appeared - the notable absentee being R S Butola, CEO of ONGC Videsh Ltd.

Sharma was PESB's number one choice in interviews conducted for the job in August last year but in February this year his appointment was not confirmed by the PMO as it wanted the selection process to be widened by inviting candidates from private sector and selection body being broadened.

Sources said PMO had not made any adverse remarks against Sharma and had explicitly made him eligible for the top job.

Jung, who was joint secretary (exploration) in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in early 1990s, resigned from IAS in 1995. He had a stint with ADB and was associated with Reliance Industries-funded Observer Research Foundation. He is presently associated with Oxford University.

Sources said ONGC director (human resources) A K Balyan's interview was the longest, lasting 65 minutes while Jung's screening was for about an hour. Sharma's interface with the Search Committee, that also included former finance secretary Vijay Kelkar and IIM Ahmedabad director Bakul Dholakia, was for 45 minutes.
