R S Gujral, an IAS officer of 1975 batch from Haryana cadre has been appointed as the new Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

NEW DELHI: R S Gujral, an IAS officer of 1975 batch from Haryana cadre has been appointed as the new Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
He will replace the current incumbent Bhawani Singh Meena who proceeded on a long leave after his reported differences with Commerce Minister Kamal Nath came to light in the pulses export scam.
Following a recommendation of Meena and pressure from PMO, Kamal Nath had opted for a CBI probe into export of pulses by some traders from the minister's home state, Madhya Pradesh defying the Cabinet directive earlier.
B S Meena has not been given an immediate alternative posting. He has been kept on 'compulsory waiting' by the new Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar.
Gujral was named the next DGFT after K M Chandrasekhar took charge as Cabinet Secretary.
Change of guard at DGFT hints at possible soft-peddling of the pulses export scam where some underworld gangs' interests reportedly have come to light.
Sources divulged that Meena was moved out after he refused to toe the Minister's line on pulses exports. Meena had ordered the window open to pulses exporters under transition arrangement much against the will of his political bosses.
No one is aware of the progress made by CBI into the pulses exports scam. Pulses were allowed to be exported while a ban was operative thereby leading to price hike in domestic markets for local consumers.
Sources said that traders made a killing by exploiting the demand for pulses abroad and creating an artificial demand for the 'dals' in the local market.
Meanwhile, Anshu Vaish, a Madhya Pradesh cadre officer has been named as the new Director General of Archeological Survey of India (ASI). P D Sudhakar, another 1975 batch officer has been named the member-secretary of Development Council for National Capital Region (NCR).
