PSUs ask small cos to scale-up quality for sales push

KOLKATA: Public sector undertakings, or PSU, can give more support to micro, small and medium enterprises, or MSMEs, provided the latter continue to scale up their technology to deliver quality products.
This was echoed by major buyers of MSME products, including Coal India, SAIL, Garden Reach Ship Builders & Engineers (GRSE), BHEL, Ordinance Factory Board and Haldia Dock Complex, while attending a vendor development programme on Tuesday, organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BNCCI).
Due to lack of availability of quality products from MSMEs, these PSU buyers have turned to imports. MSMEs can enter this market, if they come forward in developing import substitution products with technology upgradation. Towards this, big buyers are willing to provide the technological support to their vendors.
Speaking at the function, a senior official of Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) said, the system of e-procurement will be put in place in full scale after March 2009. The transparency in procurement, which will ensue, is expected to come as a great help to SMEs.
Officials of Coal India, SAIL and GRSE have advised the MSMEs to register themselves with big buyers and embrace standardisation as per the norms laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
MSMEs contribute significantly to faster development of the economy and hence this sector should be encouraged to grow and flourish. But a major drag on the development of the MSMEs is their inadequate marketing network to push their products.
This can be addressed through frequent buyer-vendor meets, said Samir Ghosh, chairman of the 22nd Industrial India Trade Fair committee, BNCCI.
