Phoenix Yule, India’s largest conveyor belt manufacturer, has decided to undertake capacity expansion for textile conveyor belt in its plant in Kalyani. The Rs 170-crore company has also approached the West Bengal government for additional land for future expansion, reports Writankar Mukherjee in Kolkata. The company’s capex for the textile belt line will entail Rs 20 crore.

The expansion will be to support the huge growth in demand for conveyor belt from the steel and coal companies and thermal power plants. Phoenix Yule’s main clients include Tata Steel, SAIL, JSW Steel and Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

“We are also working on a major investment plan to be implemented in 2008-09 for technology upgradation, increased output and cost reduction,” said Phoenix Yule MD TK Mukherjee. Incidentally, Phoenix Yule has recently invested Rs 28 crore to build a second line for steel cord belts. Phoenix Yule is a 74:26 JV between German conveyor belt major Phoenix AG and Andrew Yule & Co, respectively. The company currently has a capacity of 375 km per annum for textile belt and 180 km per annum for steel cord belt.
