Pay packets, growth prospects key to attracting young talent
The youth in Mumbai care little about a company’s brand when they walk into a job. Their counterparts in other cities are more employer brand conscious.
Of all the 443 employees surveyed, 80% agreed that brand image is an important reason for attracting talent. Likewise, 80% of the 52 HR professionals surveyed, agreed to the statement. Compensation and benefits, growth in the organisation and workplace environment were also some factors that figured prominently in the employment criteria.
Says TeamLease Services general manager, permanent staffing, Surabhi Mathur, Todays youth has higher aspirations, is more impatient, has more choices and does not view employment as a relationship but as a transaction.
Interestingly, the survey also revealed that office location and convenience in commuting is the primary criteria for accepting and keeping jobs. Barring Kolkata and Mumbai, for todays youth, proximity to office is an important parameter. It is evident from Bangalore and Hyderabad with over 90% respondents in agreement.

Most respondents agreed on growth opportunities as the important reason for employee loyalty towards an organisation. Gautam Kumar, a software engineer quit his job to pursue a career in marketing in the US.
I know it is a risky time in the US which has seen job cuts but I had enough of the technical side, says Mr umar, who worked for a data warehousing company in Mumbai. In Pune, Mumbai, Kolkata & Delhi, over 90% respondents agree that better opportunities is one of the reasons due to which young employees usually leave the company, to which the HR professionals agree.
Financial independence is also a key motivator in taking up jobs with over 70% of the respondents agreeing to it. Further, nearly 80% of youth believe that work culture is a determinant of whether one stays with an organisation or not.
As many would have liked to believe, higher compensation is not the main reason for youth moving to another organisation. The main reason for attrition is stress over job security coupled with work-life imbalance.
