A final decision will be taken later even as the panel, headed by cabinet secretary K M Chandrasekhar, held the final round of interviews on Monday. The incumbent C B Bhave’s term comes to an end on February 17, 2011.
U K Sinha is the chairman and managing director of UTI Asset Management Company and was earlier joint secretary in-charge of capital markets in the finance ministry. Pradhan has wide-ranging experience from disinvestment to Income Tax, where he had served considerable time in the central circle that was responsible for some of the most sensitive high-profile cases of corporate tax evasions—that may work in his favour for the Sebi top job.
Corporate affairs secretary R Bandopadhya, finance secretary of Madhya Pradesh G P Singhal, Himadri Bhattacharya of Tata Capital and two managing directors of SBI— S K Bhattacharya and R Sridharan—are the other contenders for the post.
Finance secretary Ashok Chawla, who is a member of the selection committee, refused to name who was shortlisted among the six candidates interviewed on Monday.
"The Sebi chairman’s post will fall vacant on February 17. Before that we will name a successor (to C B Bhave)," he said.
Besides Chandrasekhar and Chawla, others in the selection panel included financial services secretary R Gopalan and personnel secretary Alaka Sirohi.
