M&E turnover may cross Rs1 lakh cr by 2011-12
Riding high on increasing consumerism and technological improvement, the turnover of the media and entertainment (M&E) sector is expected to cross Rs1 lakh crore by 2011-12.
The turnover of the television industry, however, is projected to grow to over Rs 52,000 crore in the next three years from the current estimated level of about Rs 20,000 crore. This will include both subscription and advertising revenues, the report says.
According to the report, subscription revenue is projected to be the key growth driver for the television industry as the number of pay TV homes will increase from about 72 millions to over 100 millions by the period of 2011-12.
The next three years will further witness a blitz of conversion of various media, films, music, satellite TV, radio, entertainment, animation and gaming, among others. A confluence of factor is also procuring conversion into the mainstream from digitization of content to pervasive broadband access and lower cost. Higher performance technology, which is unleashing a wave of creative potential across the world and media content, is needing big change, said D S Rawat, Assochams secretary general.
DTH is likely to emerge as the clear winner amongst various pay television technologies and will lead the digitization of television in India. Proven, superior technology and value added services, professional customer services, all India coverage at low incremental, per subscriber cost and lower marginal acquisition cost compared to digital cable will contribute to its growth.
According to the study, television holds the larger part of viewership base and digital cinema is transforming the exhibition landscape. At present, there are over 400 channels in all and the number is expected to exceed 500 by the end of 2009.
