Malaysia to set up trading house in Dubai

Malaysia has approved the establishment of a trading house in Dubai to extend the reach of its small and medium industries in the Middle East market.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has approved the establishment of a trading house in Dubai to extend the reach of its small and medium industries in the Middle East market.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Small and Medium Industries (SMIs) Development, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal said Tuesday.

"The trading house was suggested by the private sector. The government is assisting them but we cannot run the trading house," he told reporters after officiating the listing of Bumiputera SMIs' products by Tesco Malaysia.

He said several SMIs suggested during his visit to Dubai recently to set up the trading house similar to what had been done by their counterparts from China.

The trading house established by China had succeeded in marketing the products of its SMIs more effectively in the region, he added.

"If we are serious about penetrating this market, there must be a trading house there, managed by someone with expertise in pricing, types and volume of products," he said.

He said the Cabinet had yet to decide when to set up the trading house as well as the initial allocation for it.
