Madurai-based trust chosen for national award
M S Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation has been chosen for '2007-National Award for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities' instituted by the Government of India.
The award would be presented to the trust by President Pratibha Patil on December 3 at a function in New Delhi.
The 15-year-old trust with many centres in and around Madurai, has been rehabilitating mentally ill persons by helping them improve their quality of life, founder of the trust and leading psychiatrist Dr C Ramasubramanian said in a statement.
The trust runs three centres, including one exclusively for women, two day-schools for special children and a de-addiction centre.
The trust had also started 20 Self Help Groups involving mentally challenged persons for the first time in the country, he claimed.
It organises free medical camp for the mentally ill at Sivakasi every month. The vocational training centre of the trust has been developing skills of mentally challenged persons.
The trust has helped hundreds of people recover from their mental illnesses and join the mainstream with the help of doctors, counselors and volunteers, he said.
