NEW DELHI: The First Job Marathon, aimed at lending a helping hand to ex-Navy personnel in job placements, was launched on Saturday. The event, organised by TimesJobs.com and the Indian Navy, saw civilian job seekers queuing up at the counters as well.

The Marathon was inaugurated by Commodore D Jena NM, VSM, on Saturday morning. ''This event is to facilitate our staff in making a smooth transition from the forces to the corporate world. After spending a good amount of time in Navy, these men and women, who are accustomed to a disciplined life, and have acquired multifarious skills during their tenure, are bound to fare well wherever they go. TimesJobs has provided us with an apt platform,'' said Commodore Jena.

Special career transition workshops are also being organised to familiarise the naval personnel with work ethics of the corporate world and industry requirements, said a Navy spokesperson.

''The kind of confidence that Services instil in us is tremendous. I am due for retirement next month and have come all the way from Visakhapatnam to participate in the event. Such events are definitely helpful at a time when we are to sail to a different world altogether,'' said Commander Pooja, a Logistics officer.

While there are apprehensions as they are gearing up for a ''second career'', the naval officers, retired or soon to retire, appeared a confident lot. ''The skills that I have incorporated while working with the Indian Navy for the past two decades and the discipline will surely help me make a mark on the other side of the fence as well,'' said Sanjay Lawand, a Navy official.
