Industrialisation 4.0 will create turbulence but startups will create value and jobs: Oliver Tonby, Chairman, McKinsey
He added that in the turbulence startups would be able to create value and even jobs in a country like India.
Tonby was speaking at Yes Bank Economic Times Global Business Summit (GBS) on Saturday.
He said that the artificial intelligence can just analyse habits of the shoppers and give precise instructions like keeping salmon besides wine cellar and slashing the price of the former my 10%.
Earlier in the day prime minister Narendra Modi had declared at GBS that India may have missed the bus of first three revolution “But we are going to drive the bus of industrialisation 4.0.”
The McKinsey chairman said that India has a potential to really grow and benefit from the fourth industrialisaiton as the Indians consume most data per month currently.
He said that this combined with some of the Indian companies already investing in internet of things, artificial intelligence could lead to growth.
He said that companies like L&T are already remotely monitoring how a cricket stadium is built with the help of technology.
He reiterated that the growth—even in terms of jobs—would come from start-ups in India. India currently boasts to be one of the top countries where there is a startup culture.
There would be a lot of turbulence because many jobs will disappear as we know, said Tonby. However he added startups would be saviours. He said that
startups will have to be part of a larger ecosystem and that’s how it would
create jobs of the future. He said that the way startups are coming up with
“I look at all of that and that makes me optimistic about the future in this space,” said Tonby.
“How do you build the right set of skills with the right people? Everybody's looking for data scientists, or some variation because very often we have to build them ourselves. But we have to figure out to figure out how,” said Tonby.
He said that startups will have to be part of a larger ecosystem and that’s how it would create jobs of the future.
