Indian industry needs to work for sustainable development: Pachauri
Noted environmentalist R K Pachauri, who has just returned after receiving the Nobel Prize on behalf of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change, on Saturday, said the world was heading towards a low-carbon future and Indian industry has to ...
"The future is going to be a low-carbon future and those who accept the fact are going to be winners and those who don't are going to be left behind," he said at a felicitation function for him here.
"I think the Indian industry has to make a transition that has to come about," Pachauri, who heads the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change, said.
India at the moment has no commitments, but it is only a matter of time. "We have to ensure a path of development that is sustainable and industry has to take a lead in this," he said.
He said there was a need to bring about a technology revolution in India in the sectors of transport, power and building.
"In this, my organisation TERI can join hands with the industry to organise an event on how India can have a more low carbon future," Pachauri, who is also the Director General of TERI, said.
Commenting on how climate change was affecting agricultural production, he said it was a main contributor towards reducing agricultural output.
India needs to make judicious use of water, electricity and build more rural infrastructure, he said.
