KOLKATA: City-based Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has bid to host the World Chambers Congress in the city in 2017.

"We have made a bid to host the World Chambers Congress in Kolkata in 2017 and the chamber has emerged in the final round of selection," president of ICC Roopen Roy said.

Roy said FICCI had made an unsuccessful bid in 2006 to get the event hosted in India. "If we manage to win the bid, then it will be for the first time in India," he told reporters at a news conference here today.

"The final selection would be held on September 17 in Tokyo," he said, adding that the estimated budget for the event would be about Rs 10 crore.

The Congress is held under the aegis of Paris-based World Chambers Federation, an association of over 12,000 chambers across the world.

The other competing cities are Manila, Sydney and Guangzhou, he added.

Roy said around 2,000 delegates are expected to attend the Congress and both Kolkata and West Bengal would get a great image boost if the event took place in the city.
